About this website and disclaimer
The information on this site is held on behalf of London local authorities.
Authorised officers from environmental health departments carry out inspections in food premises to ensure that the public is protected and that high standards are maintained. They are usually carried out every 6-36 months. The frequency depends on a number of factors including type of business and an assessment of risk.
With a few exceptions, all food premises inspected since 1 January 2006 in participating London boroughs now have a food hygiene star rating. This rating ranges from no stars for the worst levels of compliance, through to five stars for full compliance representing the very best standards of food safety management.
The individual scores show in detail how well the business complies with food hygiene and safety legislation. The structural conditions of the premises are checked, as well as the practices, procedures, and confidence in the management to handle food safely. Star ratings (and scores) apply to the time of the last inspection only, so they are simply a snapshot in time and may not represent current conditions. They are not a guide to food quality.
Star ratings
You can be confident that the scheme is consistent right across London because the scores used to decide the star rating are based on a national code of practice.
Inspected premises have all been awarded one of the following star ratings.
Excellent: Very high standards of food safety management. Fully compliant with food safety legislation.
Very good: Good food safety management. High standard of compliance with food safety legislation.
Good: Good level of legal compliance. Some more effort might be required.
Broadly compliant: Broadly compliant with food safety legislation. More effort required to meet all legal requirements.
Poor: Poor level of compliance with food safety legislation much more effort required.

Very poor: A general failure to comply with legal requirements. Little or no appreciation of food safety. Major effort required.
